A machine-learning based video-prediction technology learns and then re-creates a string of nature scenes and human life images. Woven together in a rhythmic, hypnotic pace, visual snippets and motion patterns appear, reborn and fall apart. The video segments begin "normally" and are then being continued by the computing process to become a "new normal". The result is surprising, eerie and poetic, raising both concerns and wonder regarding human-machine relationships, and future effects.
MIND/MIRROR
MIND/MIRROR is an urgent reflection on the power of advanced AI to produce large quantities of impactful art, fed by historical datasets of visual culture and combined with and ignited by the human artist’s imagination. It also references the vast distribution & consumption of video on social media platforms. The ‘wall’ of the video installation is an expansion of the ‘wall’ of media content we’re scrolling through on our phones. It’s an expression of the video bombardment by social media applications so prominent in our lives, both evolving and paralysing us.
A celebration of the current visual richness and the interconnectedness of our digital lives, the work invites contemplation on the role of technology and art in shaping our perception of the world and provides a visually captivating and thought-provoking experience for those who engage with it.
Presentations:
EpsomDX - a pioneering community engagement agency hosting digital immersive experiences in outdoor physical locations. Seven screens of six videos from the full MIND/MIRROR installation are installed in Madans Walk, Epsom UK, along an 18th-century brick wall. The video artworks will be revealed upon pointing the phone camera at specific locations, appearing on the smartphone’s screen as if existing in real space. Viewers will be able to inspect the screens from all angles and distances, while approaching, circling, and moving away from the artwork, all through the EpsomDX application.
